What's in a name?

What's in a name? that which we call a Swiss Roll
By any other name would taste as sweet.

Or would it?

So I've been in Switzerland now for 10 days and have not seen a single Swiss Roll. I have yet to scour the country for them but I suspect they are not easy to find. Shortly before moving here, my friend, Ellen, wrote to me and asked "Do they have Swiss Cake Rolls over there?" By the way if you have some extra time on your hands she has a blog too (
http://spacego.blogspot.com/).
According to Wikipedia, "The swiss roll is not widely eaten in Switzerland
" and even if it is they say nothing of the Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls to which I am sure Ellen was referring. Wikipedia does mention that in the US, "A chocolate swiss roll is sometimes called a chocolate log." Chocolate log only brings to mind one image. Remember the pool scene with the Baby Ruth candy bar in the movie Caddyshack. Ok, enough said.
Back to the name. Where are the Swiss Rolls? is a a bit of a jab at the isolationist Americans who think that the rest of the world either already operates like we do or, if they don't, they should. My plan with this blog is to poke fun at a couple of Americans trying to figure out Switzerland and also to poke fun at the Swiss too. After all, we are different. Those differences become much more tolerable when we can make fun of ourselves and others in a light-hearted fashion.

I don't know how I feel about being called an isolationist American on a Monday morning (as I read this post), but I do appreciate the shout out!
Mmmmm Chocolate Log!
